Prevent Future Dental Problems

These simple preventive strategies can help you:

  • Brush thoroughly with a fluoride toothpaste at least a twice day, and floss daily. Whenever possible, brush and floss after each meal. Brushing and flossing are the best way to remove plaque, the underlying cause of tooth decay. Plaque also causes Periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet and limit between meal snacks.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups, usually twice a year. Having your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis is an important step in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Start a dialogue with your dentist about protecting your teeth and gums. Your dentist may suggest sealants, a clear plastic material applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay occurs most often. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the decay-prone areas from plaque and acid. Sealants are especially effective for children.
  • Discuss periodic fluoride treatments with your dentist. Fluoride unites with tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay.

Do you have any of the warning symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

  • Gums bleed when brushed.
  • Gums are red, swollen or tender.
  • Gums have pulled away from teeth.
  • Pus between teeth and gums when gums are pressed.
  • Permanent teeth are loose or separating.
  • Change in the way your teeth fit together when biting.
  • Any change in fit of partial dentures.
  • Persistent bad breath.
