Married June, 1969. Dr. Rothenberg's wife is a freelance copy editor editing medical journals and textbooks.

His oldest son is a graduate of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, where he completed a combined MD/PhD program in Biochemistry in 2005. He then completed his clinical training at the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is on faculty at Stanford University where he balances his time between research, clinical practice in gastroenterology, and teaching trainees (medical students, residents, and fellows). He and his wife, who is also a gastroenterologist, are the proud parents of two girls.

His younger son is a graduate of Emory University. He is a Sales Executive with ADP, leading the country in promoting ADP's HR/BPO Solutions (ADP's HR Business Processing Outsourcing or, HR BPO, solution adds a strategic layer that combines people, processes, and technology). He and his wife, a RN graduate of Mercer University Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, have two children, a boy and a girl.
