Married June, 1969. Dr. Rothenberg's wife is a freelance copy editor editing medical journals and textbooks.

His oldest son is a graduate of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, where he completed a combined MD/PhD program in Biochemistry in 2005. He then completed his clinical training at the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, became board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and remained on faculty for several years where he balanced his time between basic research, clinical practice in gastroenterology, and teaching medical trainees. He is now working full time in drug development at Genentech, where he supports multiple programs in early clinical development in immune-mediated diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He remains on faculty at Stanford University as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine. He and his wife, who is also a gastroenterologist, are the proud parents of two girls.

His younger son is a graduate of Emory University and continues to reside in Atlanta, GA with his son and daughter.  He leads a national sales team as the Vice President of Sales Management for One Digital Inc., a Health & Benefits Broker that has been recognized by Inc. 5000 as one of the fastest growing privately held companies for 12 years in a row.  He is a  board member with the Roswell Youth Baseball Association and also volunteers as the head coach for his son's youth baseball team.
